New Tax Aimed to Help Seniors

Supporters of a new tax measure headed to the August 5th ballot hope to raise about 1.1-million dollars a year to pay for services for senior citizens.  Martha Wakely is co-chair of a committee that supports the measure and will be out in the community in the coming weeks urging you to vote for it.  Wakely says her committee recently took a survey of the county's elderly and found three areas of need: transportation, nurtrition, and home maintenance and repair.  Buchanan County Commissioners Wednesday approved the ballot language.   Under the proposal, the owner of a home assessed at 50-thousand dollars would pay $9.50 each year in additional taxes.  Wakely says the first year the tax is expected to raise about 1.1-million dollars.
